    Default Trolling depth

For you guys that troll a lot, how far above fish do you present your cranks? Say you see most fish suspended at 14 feet. Do you aim for 13? 12? 13 1/2?

If you are going to pull cranks, spend the $100or so to get the Precision Trolling Data app. I use mine every day. It allows me to not have to trust my memory on dive charts. I figure I save the price of the app yearly in cranks I didn’t lose thanks to it.

I try to keep my cranks a couple of feet above the crappie. If the crappie are below bait balls I try to run right thru the middle of the bait balls. This seems to fire up the fish.

My technique is much different than many folks. I purposely target structure like stakebeds and brush piles. I want my cranks to run thru the top of the structure. Sure, I lose several baits but I consider that the cost of doing business.

Like M R Dux, I keep mine in or just under the schools of baitfish. Most of where I fish is for suspended fish over deep water, without brush piles or cover, so I don't lose many lures on snags. Catfish lure thieves are my biggest challenge. I also try keep the crankbaits about 2 -3 feet above the thermocline. Baitballs will be shallow early, then tend to drop deeper as the sun gets higher.

    Good fishing when you go.
