My brother and I prefer ultra light tackle and casting and slowly retrieving. I thought that would be called tight lining, but it seems with crappie this is not the case. I want to know the name of the technique so that a forum search can be used to learn more about it.
Good question, certainly takes great angling skill to make the jig navigate in four directions and stay intensely in tune with any contact with the jig,is it grass, bottom, diving bird, over a branch underwater, has a crappie put it in its mouth and not otherwise disturbed its path. Doesn't seem very fitting description; casting and reeling.

Well I can not give to a name for it Other than “fishun”. I use the same technique most of the time in Open areas. Lose lots of jigs to snags and in general have fun. A wise elbow here once called it “Horizontal Jigging”.
now, everyone knows I am not even close to being an expert in catching anything but it is a blast when they hit it that way. Plus other critters seem to like it at times also.

Here in Oklahoma we call it cast n drag.
We cast to brush piles and drag it through.
Open water I’d call it cast n reel.

Cast & retrieve without a float or with a float. That's what I call good ole fishing. That's the way my dad & grandpa's taught me & that's the why I teach my kids.
