When we hit Alaska for Sockeye I carry a big salt water open faced Penn on a medium heavy 7 foot ugly stick , going after them fish up there is what the locals call combat fishing . The average rod and reel cannot handle the stupidity of a sockeye on the end of the line ,seen a many rods get SNAPPED and watched reels just literally blow up with a fish on .
Never visit the sockeye run with anything less than real tough solid equipment , them fish you see getting 10 foot of air under them going past the bears are really hard to reel in on a fishing rod I promise .
