saw a pile yesterday on my friends cleaning table and half were males and half were females and it is normally hard to tell the difference at the end of May

Might it have gotten too hot, too quick, and these egg laden ladies have simply given up on the deed ... but just haven't started absorbing them, just yet ??
I know, around here, the weather extended the spawning period by several weeks .... and even some fish species I've caught over the last few weeks, that should have spawned already, were still carrying eggs. And we were still catching males close to the banks, though even they have greatly diminished in numbers in recent trips.
it might be like the cactus thing out west ,the Sagauro have lost their minds , blooming in an effort beyond comprehension out of season .
not sure why ,but the weather changes we are encountering daily are not the norm from back when .

I saw that and read the article. That is an amazing event. Botanists think they have really been stressed. Around here, the bedding on the creek is really off in all the usual locations. We have had a cold and pretty dry spring. With recent rain my local creek right now is rip roaring, so once it settles it will be interesting to see if it triggers a spawn.
