Braid vs Mono

With all the conflicting opinions on what may be the biggest debate on Crappie.com, Ive decided to figure out what my opinion is on the matter. I’m In the process of switching almost all my gear over from mono to braid. Casting rods, spider rigging rods, trolling rods even my catfish and walleye rods. By the end of the season I’ll have some comments to make. I already appreciate the way it ties vs mono and the casting distances of light jigs.

I bet you will find it runs deeper when Longlining, and fish will not be line shy on 2-4lb dia braid. Easier to straighten hooks when hung also. In addition to less line loops and more casting distance.

However, get a tangle from a striper , bass or catfish and it will be a mess.

Just be sure and have a short piece of wooden dowel (or equivalent) to wrap the braid around to pull baits free from snags. Braid will cut you good if you use your hands/fingers !!
I also recommend a pair of Child Size Fiskar Scissors to cut braid with. It cuts the braid tag end "blunt" (no raggedy end) and that blunt end is "easier" to put thru the line eyes of small baits. The scissors are small & fit in a tacklebox easily, and they're very inexpensive @ around $2.00 at WallyWorld (craft section or school supplies section).

Palomar knot 97% break strength. Add another 1 or 2 % with a drop of super glue

I use the Improved Clinch on my braid & haven't had any problems. I do, however, suggest tying a "double granny knot" in the tag end when using brand new or super slick braid. I tie the Improved Clinch & leave a long tag ... then tie the double granny in the leftover tag as close to the Improved Clinch as possible. When I cinch the Improved Clinch knot down to "tight" and the line slips, it will be stopped by the granny knot on the tag. I've only had to do this with new PowerPro 10/2 as once the coating has worn away it's not as slick and the Improved Clinch will hold without the Granny Knot on the tag. And on my larger diameter braid (30/10) I haven't had need to use the Granny Knot on the tag (but that braid was "used" braid that came with the used reels I bought from a friend).

And just FYI ... a "Granny Knot" is simply a overhand knot, so a Double Granny is just a overhand knot that the tag end is passed thru the loop "twice" (just makes it bigger). If the braid is real small diameter (like 10/2 or 8/1) you may even want to experiment with a Triple Granny.

The palomar knot and the Surgeon's loop never fails me.

The key is to double up the line before tying, here are some samples

Palomar knot
Improved Palomar Knot by wrapping the over hand knot twice before looping over the hook (traditional is just one single overhand knot)
Multifile knot
double up the line for clinch knot
double up the line for uniknot

What brand and sizes are using on each technique (casting, trolling, etc)? Are you using a fluoro leader, or just straight braid?
