Chains tear up stake beds and underwater structure, use a 5 gallon bucket pulled behind you boat.

This might be my all-time favorite CDC thread:

"I've got to go to the hardware store. I've got a brain storm to start Spider-Chaining and I will need at least 5 more chains out the rear to match the spider-rigging poles in front. Do you fellows use longer chains on the outsides and shorter ones straight out the rear? Should I use 14 or 16' chains?"

    LOL

I would go with a drift sock, less weight in the boat too.

I have used a 8 foot 3/8 chain tied to a 20 foot rope. I have a bass tracker pro 16 boat if the wind is to bad for this I go home and wait for a better day as I don't like windy days anyway.

3/8in chain,2 7fters,30ft of rope with a loop tied every 5ft.The more rope you let out the slower you will go.Just be careful if you try it,have always heard chain could get hung on something and you start takeing water over the back of the boat.I have drift socks too and only use chains in a haft to situation, hate they tear up structure. The only time i use chains is when i tournament fish or prefish for a tournament.

I am of the opinion there are lots of ways better to slow up a drift than a chain drug on the bottom .
