If those nibbles are fresh out of the jar ... a minnow sized fish can snatch them off in a split second. You need to let them dry out a bit, first (on or off the hook). Or if you happen to be using hollow tube baits, they can be stuffed inside the tube and the scent trail will still be there, though somewhat diminished. That may also present the bait as the main factor, rather than the colored lump riding along.
