When flatlining cranks I try to keep my pole tips as close to the water as possible. I pull off the sides and try to keep about 4- 5 foot of line out from the tip of my rods to where the line enters the water. Like others have said the running depth is determined by how many feet of line out once the line enters the water. There are other variables also, rod angles effects this, the higher the rod tip the shallower a crank will run as opposed to a more flat / closer to the water presentation approach. I agree with the above poster as well. Try longer poles on the front of the boat, sounds like you stirring them up for the man in the back to catch em'
