A lot of times when I clean mine I have to catch-em a 2nd time. When my youngest daughter(11) goes all fish are promptly released. And she loves to eat crappie.

It's about an hour drive home for me so a bag or two of ice on top and there is hardly any blood when the cleaning starts; however I plan to start cleaning my fish at the lake this year I think the swiftness of my electric fillet knife can get the meat off before anything starts to affect the taste of the meat but just to be sure I will put it to the test and do a few each way. As for the fish flopping around that's no longer an issue after I make my first cut behind the gill plate they usually mellow out pretty quick. I think the ikejime method could make a difference on bigger fish like big cats or the large ocean fish.

Personally I like them to be alive when the filet comes off.
I know they are as fresh as possible.
    To each his own.

I'm surprised this hasn't gone terribly wrong :-) I was prepared for some serious sarcasm.

I normally shoot them in the livewell right before I clean em. I am about to start a new thread about why so much water comes out after I remove the drain plug.

I worry about my catch also .I am especially careful to step squarely on ants as I am walking to and from the truck. I shudder at the thought of an ant in agony .
