In my area , I fish the base of trees 2-4 feet of water with jig only. Most of the trees have other cover as well , like grass or bushes. I use a pretty stiff pole so I can muscle them out before they tangle.

good info thanks
on a side note ….I noticed some blacks from florida on a Skeetbum post that had what seemed to be spawn looking tails as well .
mid late april thru mid may in northern mo on my home lake. will be interesting to see when they go on our lake in STL area.
I heard a professional angler say way up north black crappie move up as soon as ice out in the 40 degree water my friend .
you might want to look sooner than April for them black diamonds …..I have not a clue that far north but it might happen .
and heck 40 degree water may not even occur until April as far north as the upper US and Canada ?
Up here, when the Dog Woods are blooming the crappie will be spawning, at least that's what Al Linder always says and he does know a little bit about fishing. We're usually driving on the ice in early April yet.
dogwoods here mean the same thing and they are doing it well everywhere in our area at that time pretty much as well , but to be sure it starts well before that from what I have seen in many spots locally of course I count prespawn in with the spawn and post spawn as well and then there is always to summer and fall spawn tooooo......:Rofl
