CASTING MONO vs BRAID

You’ve gotten some good info so far. One of the issues with mono is memory. If you’re going to feel it at all it will be with braid which has no memory. I use 2lb and 4lb Nanofil and while I like the casting I have to say that it has a different personality and isn’t for everyone. Won’t know til you try. Haven’t tried the fire line crystal but from crest liners posts I find it interesting.

You see, the problem with braid is that it is a "braid" afterall. That is, single threads woven together to create the final product. The surface of these weaves create drag. And anything that creates drag when casting UL jigs will lessen your casting distance. Physics. You'd be much better off with a "fused" braid, with has the benefits of a regular braided line, without the memory issues of fluoro or mono main lines.

The fusing process aligns each strand side by side and literally fuses them together, creating a much smoother/slicker surface to the end product. Also, unless you are fishing brush or heavy weeds, I would not recommend 10/2 size braid or fused lines. A 2# or 4# test fused line will maximize your casting distance.

BUT......you can go with the heavier braids if you are fishing wood or brush piles. The power of which you will need to free yourself from snags. You also need to remember that braid, or fused line, has very little abrasion resistance, so you will need a fluorocabon leader - for that abrasion resistance quality only. With my 2# test Fireline Crystal, I attach a 4' section of 4# test fluorocarbon. This gives me the best of both worlds. JMO!
