Quite some time ago, I noticed how much gear I had that I no longer used or hadn't touched in a very long time. I have mostly quit chasing green fish so there went a couple of large boxes of soft plastics alone. Then the condition of the hard baits were thinned first by condition and also by amount of use. So long story short, I too have shed a large amount of gear, rods included and a few reels. The system I have adopted works very well and allows a good selection without having to carry everything I own. First, I have a shelf that stores any overflow and extras that I might have. Boxes are there for seasonal or species changes because like you, I can't carry it all. I found a 6 gallon milk crate and added a piano hinge and 1/2" plywood lid so it can be sat on. At one point it also had a plastic swivel seat. That holds the bigger Plano boxes. If those are taken out, it will hold lots of the medium sized boxes. I have always had a travel box for when I go with someone, and the last one's zipper gave up so the new one holds 4 Plano small boxes and some pockets for small boxes and loose stuff. With a little thought I can carry plenty of what I will use for the day, and have a good selection at the house. There's lots of options that with a little thought will keep you cookin. I'm adding a few pics to show what I'm talking about.....Skeet.
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
I evaluate all my gear during the winter months. Clean, organize, etc. used to carry a box for each fishing method, slip bobber, cranks, spinners, spider rigging, etc. then one for walleye and one for bass. Last year I bought a hardsided Plano Guide series tackle box. It has four 3700 series boxes that can be swapped out. Now I keep extra 3700's on a shelf in the garage and swap in/ out what I need for the day/ trip.

I too have been reducing my crappie tackle this past year or two. I have bought so many jig bodies over the years I doubt I could ever use them. I've made a rule that I don't buy any new plastics unless I have used all of that type and I don't have ANYTHING similar it. I probably have at least a hundred packs of jig bodies and some of them are so similar I just make myself use what I have.
Now if I could just make myself follow the same rule when it comes to bass tackle. I've been doing a lot more bass fishing in the last two years and it seems like there's always a new technique to try.![]()
