I have lost fewer fish on crankbaits by using a slow action or medium action rod. I think 6'6" is a good compromise. If I had the money I would buy St.Croix Premiers or Triumphs. But their are a some other good rods for less.
Fish can shake loose the hooks on a crankbait with a fast action rod quicker than a medium or soft action. You want the action over most of the rod not just the tip.
I ain't no expert just some observations I have made and opinion and you know what they say about them
Hello Abbot: No those rods would not be good for casting. I suggest a 6'6" or 7' medium or medium light rod for Crappie. Good Luck. O - R
