To me braid is a big part of the equation. The lack of stretch telegraphs the bite. I use a fast action rod with a pretty stiff overall action. You don't want too soft of rod absorbing the braids responsiveness. I use a leader...it adds just a little shock absorption to help keep from pulling a hook and I catch more fish with a leader. I use a G Loomis G2 6' 6" To me I am more concerned with the action then length, there are a lot of rod brands that will work. I just want a rod thats firm and has a grip that does not put much between me and the rod blank. I want the bite coming in on the telegraph line right to hand. I also have an old Bass pro Bionic blade 7ft that works good....I bought it at a tackle close out for 25 bucks. I stand a rod up with the butt against my left foot....hold the rod at the seat or just above with my left hand...and bow the rod at the tip with my right. The resistance it takes and how the rod bends tells me everything I need to know with that simple test.
if you can build a rod, you would love this. it's perfect for drop shotting panfish. i love mine, and all i do is drop shot. American Tackle Company - Black Matrix Clear Gloss Rod Blanks it's listed on this page

what is drop shot, sorry for stupid question but trying to learn. recently bought a 6' 6" rod from Scheels. Met a guy who said use a 1/4 jig with minnow over piles. is this the same as drop shot or am I missing something. just looking for more ideas and suggestions
thanks
Basically ...
Drop shot fishing is using a weight at the end of the line & a hook tied to the line above it ... usually less than 3ft above the weight. The weight sits on the bottom, and your hook/bait are on a slightly slack line ... and you jiggle the rod tip to impart a little action to the bait.
You can use regular hooks, if you tie them on with a Palomar knot ... or you can buy "stand out" hooks. The hook should be sticking out from the line at a 90deg angle.

Potatoe thanked you for this post

works great for crappie.
Shimano Sellus Spinning Rods
I use a seven foot one piece Mr Crappie Rod made by Lews. Excellent dropshot Rod that I picked up from Fast Eddies shop down near KY Lake. Spooled it with six pound test nanofil on a president reel and I'm good to go.
Light or med light walleye rods work well

Any ML fast tip graphite rod IM6 or better with braid for sensitivity.
I currently use a couple Cabela's Pro Guide 7' or Pro Guide PTC in 8' (rated UL but really a ML action).
If wanting to spend more I really like the Diawa Presso mentioned earlier.
