Since crappie are a schooling fish and usually found in groups, would having two or three baits on one rod help catch more fish? Maybe two fish at a time? I've done this with Bluegill, putting a slightly heavier bait on the bottom and having another fly live bait or jig a couple feet above while I drift thru a productive area in my float tube. Is this something that serious crappie fishermen do?
