I like the look of that solo reel, essentially a stripped down fly reel with an longer stem. Frabill makes one as well that Grizzly is carrying. I went with Shimano IX2000r spinning reels because they're cheap, effective and have a proven track record for reliability. Less line memory on the 2000 size vs the smaller 1000. They pull double duty on longline rods so I saved some money by not purchasing spider rig specific reels.

I just replaced all 12 of my mixed bunch of spider rig reels with Shakespeare Agility mini low profile thumb bar baitcasters for the very reason G mentioned.

The more I think about it the better I feel about what I ordered, I like the way a spinning reel or fly pole type reel weights the pole in the right way, what I am trying to say is I think the bait casters would make the pole turn upside down more often, although I do like the idea of letting line out with one hand using the thumb lever on a bait caster but I never open the bails on my spinning rods anyway, plus I wont have to deal with line twist anymore. They make a bait caster that hangs underneath the rod.

I have looked at them but can't find them on the net.

I have all six of my rods with OKUMA line counter reels. They work great. Caught a 29" striper in one of my 16' rods, reel sang a beautiful song as I pulled it in.

Plus if you're like me and occasionally hook into another specie like a bass or catfish, it's better to have a drag system.

I am looking to replace my spinning reels on my 14 ft crappie poles and thinking about the possibilities of using a physically smaller reel. My thoughts are I could almost be using a bamboo pole if it was'nt for having to adjust depths occasionally, fish are swung onto the deck more than reeled in if you get the picture. Anyway I know very little about Ice gear and wanted to see if what Ice guys would think? I am thinking a smaller reel with a decent drag would would fit the bill, I had even thought about trying one of my fly pole reels, but that would be a pricey option, fyi we usually run 4-6# mono with up to 1oz of weight.
After poking around the internet I found 2 affordable type of reels that are smaller and possibly more durable rolling around on the deck of my Tracker and just wanted to see if anyone uses them and opinions?

For spider rigging, I started out using Shimano FX 1000FB spinning reels and last year I purchased
Abu Garcia Max bait casters with thumb bars (SMAX3-L). I am right handed but got left handed reels. I like controlling the rod with my right hand and I am use to spinning reels and reeling with the left hand.
