    A few other things to mention: We had a hard time learning to control those long rods and smoothly land our fish if we were short lining. It really helps to have a fishing buddy in the boat with you to assist. Tie up plenty of rigs ahead of time and use quick snaps, you'll see the darnedest tangles and knots you've ever seen! You'll appreciate being able to rig back up quickly when you hit a school of mad spots that wreck up all your gear.

    And that's exactly why many prefer to use baitcast reels with a thumb bar or "flippin switch" !!
