I think he's referring to "rod placement" (out the sides) rather than trolling motor placement.

Rods off the sides at 90 degrees, I pull and push this way all the time.

I fish from a pontoon and use the big motor (60hp 4cycle) to troll with, it idles 2.3mph which is a little fast but have been satisfied with my catch my first year pushing cranks.

I fish with 14 12 10ft rods with in line 3oz wt by Scotty V method with 300 Bandits at different depths using the chart to determine the depth at 45 degree angle.
