You are correct, the big marinas seldom want to work on the older machines. The key is to find a small independent shop NOT near the lake and NOT in a new building on a main drag. I found a guy who retired from one of the big marinas around here (I live near Kentucky Lake) who works out of his house out in the farm country. He is reasonable but has some quirks - like he wants cash - no credit cards or checks. For what he charges I will do as he wishes.
Again you have to find the right shop. And if you think fixing an old one is expensive, check the prices of new outboards -![]()
