I did this on KY lake years ago. Told Brad i wasn't interested in numbers or size of fish (redears) we were after. I just wanted to learn the type of areas they can be found and what techniques to try in those areas. The lake was 8ft higher than normal pool at that time and he told me that these areas we're fishing today are close to the spots but closer to shore than i'd normally find the fish. Same technique tho. I learned so much that day. And we still put almost 70 gills, shellcrackers, catfish, and a few yellow bass in the livewell/cooler. Another benefit was that he cleaned all of them and bagged them up for me to take home. Money well spent for a lesson well learned. Your equipment might not be right for the type of fishing you'd like to learn to do so allow the person/guide that's fishing with you to bring what works for him, with him. These guys from CDC would be more than happy to help show you the ropes. They've helped me tremendously over the years.
