Thread: Motor swap project.

So my father-n-law suggested we swap motors on our boats because he plans on selling his, I had a mercury 25 and his a mercury 40, both tiller steer 2 stroke, his 40 hp is 10 years newer with electric start so I said sure, we completed the swap last weekend, that 40 looked big on my 15 ft Jon boat, I was worried the weight difference was going to make it sit too low in the rear. We went to false river yesterday to try it out, needless to say it did perfect, the weight really made no difference at all, but it gets on plane quicker and gained about 7 mph. We jigged around some piers for a bit but caught nothing. Electric start is nice.

If you feel the weight in the back, mount the battery towards the front.

nice swap. Dat extra horse will help when you have additional passengers

There’s a whole lot that can be done to those motors to make them turn even more HP. Good solid motors for sure, very popular with duck hunters too.

Can also move gas tank. Balance all weight to sit level. A lean will hurt performance and handling

I went from a rope start to electric start just recently, can't believe I wated that long. Good swap.

1st thing Skippa Chippa told me Friday we he came fishing with me - "you need to get an electric start!" I said I know but the motor is a 2001 and I just don't have the extra $700 right now. Need to get one soon though, I'm getting older! lol Nice motor and can't go wrong with a 25 or 40 Mercury, I ran a 25 for years and nothing on the market has a better water pump system than the merc! That's important when you run the shallow marshes like I do!

I really never gave electric start a thought, but now that it’s there I think I’m going to enjoy it! Thought about moving things around in the boat but it ran good like it was, not to mention along with all the stuff my wife brings with us fishing I really don’t have much space to move the battery and gas tank. It really is a well built boat, it’s a Louisiana Traveler.

I bought one of the manual pull, no power trim 2 stroke carb 40 mercs some years ago, but it hated to run tilted up in shallow water drive, I guess the carbs would load up. I tried to like it, but sold it within a month. Is yours manual tilt? Mine had that shock absorber deal so when you hit something, it came up slow and went down slow, rather than a fast hard slam to transom. I thought that was the best thing as I was and still run some very shallow log infested bayous. I think Suzuki 25-30 may have that now on their manual versions. Like DHC said, they routinely hop those Mercs like yours up to running 60++
