    Default Bayou Chevreuil 2-11-18

I wanted to fish Saturday 2-10-18, but something about family reunion was planned and it would have been quite frowned upon if I missed so I had to sit tight and wait until Sunday hoping the weather would cooperate. I had every intention of launching at Freds in Vacherie, but the boat ramp is closed and from what i gathered from the two people I know with camps down there it will be closed for the next two weeks. ( I do not know if anyone else uses that ramp, but just a heads up)
Everything got scrapped at that point and headed to the next closest launch which is Bayou Chevreuil off HWY 20 just south of Vacherie. It is a pretty good launch with a fair sized parking lot and it is not too far from Baton Rouge. I headed towards the Lac and started fishing dead end canals.
This is the first time I have fished this area in a boat, I have launched there in my kayak in the spring and have done alright but nothing spectacular. It took me a few hours to find a canal that looked good with the right amount of water for fish to start moving in. I was catching a lot of smaller sacs from 5"-7" right where the canal was dumping into the bayou with the water changing. As I ventured a bit further back the water was warmer and had fish activity both along the banks and bait fish being chased in the middle. I started catching better fish about 50 yards from the main canal along with more smaller sacs. I caught somewhere between 7-10 bream, but no keepers and surprisingly did not catch a bass on a road runner. I ended the day with 6 keepers and should have had 8 but decided to try and flip my first two in the boat...should have known better.
Water temps were 60-62 in the main bayou even though it was chocolate mil and was 65 in the canal i caught my keeper fish. Caught half on a road runner and half under a cork.....the bite was finicky most of the day but truly believe the slab sauced helped pull a few fish out of their hiding places.

Way to save the day. Those little fish means good fishing in the future.

I'd rather be out there catching small ones and keepers here and there compared to not catching anything at all. Sounds like you had a good time and that's what it's all about. Good report
