I fished from 9am to 6pm. It was slow. Nobody was catching much of anything. I stopped and talked to an old timer who was fishing with about 8 homemade cane poles. When I asked how many he caught he said lots of potatoes for dinner because he only had 2. I gave him my 5. He was a happy camper. We talked for a while and he told me a few good spots to try on the river. He asked where I was from and he knew the family I used to fish with on Laccassine bayou. We sat there and talked for a while. He gave me pointers on how he catches on the Calcasieu, Mermentau, and Laccassine Bayou. I caught 5ft deep in the river and 18in in the canals. Fish were tight to structure. Today they played with the shiner. None took it hard. They would just nudge it. Only way I could set the hook was to let them take it for 3 to 5 seconds before setting the hook. If I tried to set it any sooner they would spit it out or steal the shiner. Looks like its Laccassine or the Mermentau tomorrow. Here are a few pics.![]()
