What is that?

It is called a longtail bass they'ret caught in deeper waters offshore. My brother caught two of them this weekend. Just thought it had a lot of lines that look like a Crappie especially around the mouth and head. The meat is very similar but slightly sweeter. Very neat looking fish

this is a longtail bass. Similar to a queen snapper but they are smaller and don't have a forked tail.

Yea a lot of snapper have the same name in the fisherman's guide I guess it depends where and who you fish with. In the guide those fish have the same name but as you pointed out they are totally different fish the Longtail is a much prettier fish. The queen is also called Ball-bat and Silk but what we call a silk looks more like a Longtail with a small fork in tail with very fine scales and a yellow eye. We only catch them every once in a while.
