    Default Calcasieu Pier

    Hi all,

I'm a newbie and just went on a charter last weekend and had a blast. I wanted to check out the pier at Calcasieu and wondered if it would be worth it if I was only looking to catch 2-3 fish? If so, what kind of bait would you recommend?

    thank you.

Will need a little more information than the pier at Calcasieu. Is that the Calcasieu jetties or the pier at Calcasieu point? Or the public pier on Calcasieu lake in Old Settlement?

The wharf at Calcasieu Pt. boat launch is very nice. I see a lot of people fishing there, there is also bank fishing in that area. You can catch a few fish there, but I wouldn't expect a lot. I see a big drum caught once and a while. Croaker and hardheads will probably be the most common catch.

The wharf at the jetties in Cameron can be good at times. Lots of big reds are caught there, drum also. Maybe a few flounder.

The beach can be great at times. Lots of specks when the north wind blows and the water clears up. People also fish for big reds with surf rods and cut mullet. To get there, go to Holly Beach and go west. Hope this helps

FYI, the Calcasieu point fishing area closes at 11 PM. You can also fish with bait shrimp but if you are after the big reds, I agree with Tiger on fishing the jetties with cut mullet.

Thanks y'all. This is why I love this board; friendliest bunch of fisherman around.
