    Default Spill way, Dam fishing techniques


    Anyone ever had much success catching crappie near a spill way or a Dam. I've always had trouble catching them in those areas with strong moving currents

    FYI, the state's top fly-caught white crappie - 1.75 pounds or so - was caught in the spillway below the Cypress Lake Dam, which was being topped (But barely) by a high lake at the time. The largest I've caught in a spillway were below the Cross Lake dam - again, with a little current passing through it.
    Two suggestions. Time your trip to coincide with the time that any serious high water in the lake has receded or drained off, and fish with a tiny Beetle-spin or Roadrunner. Make your casts up-current and make a slow retrieve as the lure is swept along by the flow. That will put you in the ballpark.

    We used to fish a spillway when it was being topped with shiners and a lantern at night. We'd hang the lantern down to a foot or 2 off the water and run shiners and a cork.
