Tote a bucket of shiners along. Also keep a rod rigged up to fish with crickets - bring a basket of them along as well. If the shiners are slow, find a big laydown off the bank and pitch the crickets to them real close. Those little red speckled bellied bream will keep her busy. It works for small kids everywhere I have fished. Much of the time, they're only in for some action. Fun as well.

Mine goes with me and the only thing she needs is her chair with the sunshade and her gossip mag. Doesn't need me to bait her hook or remove her catch. I use what I want for bait and move as much as I want and nothing is said about what is going on.

In summer I go to a jig on bottom and a hook about 14" or so above for the minnow. I use a Gamakatsu Drop shot hook and I tie it on using the Palomar knot and have a very long tag line. Last thing I do before tying on the jig is I run the line back through the eye one more time so that when I put tension on the line the hook stands upright. Then I tie on a 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig below for weight and bait.
i have even started hooking one of the tiny Glup minnows on the jig to gove it some scent. This is a Newark for me.

also know if the fish you see on your sonar are spread out from top to bottom it's not crappie! If you see fish that are grouped up some and they are staying in a 5' part of the water column, also meaning from top to bottom of the school should be mush more than 5'. Then you have a good chance they are crappie. This may not be 100% of the time that they are crappie, but that is what I go by.

Very informative and thanks a lot for the tips. I used to perch jerk all the time but have given it up for yrs to raise my kids. Now they are 11-12 I'm getting back to my passion, but things have changed a lot it seems. The white perch are different then 10 yrs ago its seems or maybe give different now that I'm living in south la.
