Thread: yo-yos good or bad

If you run them every 3 or 4 hrs fine, if not I don't think you should have them and pick them up when your done. I saw a Blue Heron dead on one last summer, it got caught by the wing, now that was a real shame. I have been know to cut the hook off if I fish the same area for several days after I saw the Heron dead. I think the rules on recreational trot lines and hoop nets have to be tagged with your name, licence number and date set. Trot line also are to have a cotton lead from the tree or limb so if you leave it, it will rot off and go to the bottom. I have seen several sun dried fish at Larto, not sure but I doubt they are any good to eat like that, don't think you could cook enough rice to go with that. My wife and I put a 10" min when the freezer is out of fish and once we start having pretty much in the freezer we go to 12" and 12 to 15 fish limit, mainly because she hasn't learned how to felit them and I don't like cleaning too many. We are lucky enough to get to fish 10 to 12 days a month.

I wish more folks did what you do........at my camp and my brother-in-laws camp next door, we have a 10" min. on white perch and rarely come in with more than 30 fish per boat...some weekends it's normal to have 6 to 8 boats fishing out of the 2 camps, those are our rules and all abide by them.....we catch all we can eat,so there's no need to come in with a ice chest of 6 inch fish!!!!
A few weeks ago, I had one of the most enjoyable fishing trips I've had in a long time, I managed to catch probably 50+ fish in the last 2 hours before dark and kept 15, of the 15, one was 10.5 inches long and all the rest were 12 inches long or better.........I had a blast catching the fish and was more than happy to throw back 8 to 10 inch fish........once I have 10 to 15 slabs in the live well,I'm happy,that's all I need or want to clean at one time.I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've kept more than 25 fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the size limits you guys talk about as well as the quantity limits. I was at Larto last weekend and saw way too many people loading the boat with 5" - 6" fish. That's a shame as far as I'm concerned. I think yo-yo's should be banned as well - where's the sport?

I use yoyos exclusively at Chicot State Park. They implement a limited season, from November thru February. You are limited to 24 yoyos. Each yoyo must have your name, boat registration number and the date you set them. You are limited to 48 hours. After that, you are subject to a ticket. And they give'em too. Perhaps the whole state should go to those rules.

I went camping and set yoyos this weekend. The lake is still 2 foot low, but fishable. I caught 1 large bass (4.5 lbs) 3 large white perch and 5 polywog catfish. I did get a report that the bass were biting really well. When I would get into some really shallow water, I could see a number of large wakes of big bass taking off. They have a slot limit over at Chicot. Anything between 14 and 17 inches must be thrown back, so that prevents you from taking very many home.

i love yoyoers why wouldnt i like someone trolling the banks where im fishing with the engine running ...why wouldnt i love someone leaving sac au lait drying out in a bush for three hours. if you want to fish start fishing and stop being lazy

Limiting, banning, controlling. That is the American way these days, so I guess the same should go to the fishing. I think we should probably ban jugs too and don't forget about trot lines. I've had then get tangled up in the prop and on my jigs. Oh, and we should definitely do away with the use of lead sinkers. They're harmful to animals, didn't you know? Their should probably be a strictly enforced speed limit of no more than 35 mph on all state lakes. Those people might hurt themselves speeding around like that. And size limits. Definitely. Why would Anyone want to take home a whole fryer? Don't they know those little bones are dangerous and can get stuck in your throat if your not careful? No No. That should definitely be illegal.


I see now how these things have all contributed to the terrible fishing in Louisiana over the past 30 years. I always thought things were pretty good, but apparently we have the worst fishing holes in a tri state area because we aren't regulated enough. I'm young and a sponge for knowledge, so this thread has indeed opened my eyes to the need of more restriction and enforcement by the WLF. I will be writing my governor on all these matters. <tic>

I think your missing the points being made here. I too have fished yo yos, but quit when I had enough for a fish fry (25 to 30 fish), stayed with them and let the little ones go to fight another day, I haven't hung a yo yo in 10 years now and don't intend to....
I'm not for more laws/regualtions, but there are way too many people abusing the use of yo yos and when that happens as with anything else, laws/regualtions need to be put in place....
My grandfather opened a mariner on Spring Bayou in 1953 and had a guide service with 15 guides. He also guided fishermen mostly for white perch year round except during the duck season,I spent my summers as a kid there cleaning fish for the fishermen, the catches coming in day in day out were amazing,you know why??????NO yo yos back then and NO illegal netting back then, that's why.If a fisherman found an illegal net, they cut it to ribbons..They also followed the law religousily and were very selective when fishing as far as little fish go.......You could go out on the water pretty much year round and catch a mess of white perch......
Now, on the last day of duck season, there are at least a dozen boats waiting for 2:01pm to go out and set yo yos, some boats set as many as 100, they leave them out thru March and it's not uncommon to see 1000+ yo yos hanging,yes, that's ONE THOUSAND+.....They completley surround the cypress trees with yo yos till it looks like christmas ornaments hanging!!!!!!!!!! They brag about catching 1500+ white perch in a few short months, you think they eat all those fish?????? I'd say 90% are SOLD!!!!!! Is this fair to the many sport fishermen that use the area??????????????
Like I said, I dsislike regualtions as much as anyone, but sometimes they are needed due to the circumstances.........
You don't have to go far from Phil's Landing to count 100+ yo yos right now.......weekends, you can easily triple that number!!!!!!!!!
