I told my son today that we should go get some gills. They are going on nest. They are just starting but are there. we caught 93 over 9" one afternoon a few years ago. caught them in the parking lot of Peninsula Marina. Seriously. Right now there is some water where I am talking about but not much. It was 4-5' deeper that year. I am talking about the lowere gravel lot. beside the ramp to walk out to the marina.. We waded out and sight fished the beds. you can see them in a boat better.
Peak is the full moon of May.
Just find a shallow cove with a gravel bottom, if you have a boat. If not just find a shallow gravel bank and look for the light colored pan shaped nests. If you don't see them try some red worms right off the bottom. Throw out pretty deep to start and keep going shallow till you find them. Red worms work best to me but when you find them try a small jig. Like a 1/32 oz. Just pull it across the beds and they will pick it up to move it and there ya go. I switch to a jig when I find them. Is easier to not have to rebait so much.
Good luck you should do well.
Barren is a good lake for gills. I don't fish in the summer but will go in May to put some gills in the freezer. I have a cove near Walnut Creek Marina that I go to year after year.
