    Default wind direction

I've always heard fish bite the least when the wind blows from the east, best from the west, is there anything to this or just a catchy saying someone came up with? Not that it really matters, if the wind is blowing or not from any direction if i'm off work i'm going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

out of the south blows the bait in their mouth. Out of the north, fish won't venture forth. According to my paternal grandfather.

Fish for Perch on Lake Michigan, when the wind shifts to the East its like turning off a switch.

That was true when I lived by Chicago but today didn't find a fish out of the west but whitecaps were in Malcolm creek bay! Hard to stay over any cover....fished for 2 hours and never saw a fish! Guys drifting said they had a few. Tomorrow I'm spider rigging EARLY!!!

BIGBADDAD, you were in Malcolm? What kind of boat were you in? I was drifting with drift bags from a red Lund.

Wind from the north, go not forth
Wind from the south, blows the fly to the fishes mouth
Wind from the east, fishings the least
Wind from the west fishings the best

Any north or south wind on the twin lakes makes serious wakes.

I made the last one up my self, but it is very applicable too.

Beige Alumacraft. I stopped near you to see how you were doing on the drift. Out for 2 hours yesterday but never saw a fish. That wind was fierce!

My grand-dad taught me the same, wind from the east fish bite the least, and I believe it. However, I think that the main point is barometric pressure changes.
Generally speaking, the wind blows from a Westerly direction year-round for the most part. So I see a western wind as a norm.
A Northern wind usually indicates a high pressure system and the fish run deep and tuck tight to structure. High pressure systems are usually blue bird days (clear and bright skies).
Now a southern wind indicates a low pressure system that has clouds/ rain. Fish usually are more aggressive, shallower, and feed during this pressure system.
An Eastern wind is a mix of any pressure system with the exception that it is not normal.
This is just my 2 cents on the topic and there are always exceptions to the rule. Crappaholics know that barometric pressure is a small part of the dozens of situations we, as fisherman, have to evaluate in order to be productive in catching fish. Not to say that this philosophy has helped me catch anymore fish, but I have a scientific explanation to blame when I get skunked!

Beer before whiskey pretty risky, whiskey before beer never fear.....My old fishing partner always said if the cows were all laying down fish wouldn't bite!

Normally an east wind means a front is passing through or has recently. Last week at Kentucky Lake the best fishing day I had by far had an east wind.
