KDFW Needs Help (Stocking Program)
Talked to Paul Rister about the new stocking program and they need help collecting brood fish at Little River and Blood River on Feb. 28 at 7:00 AM. They are asking people to sign up for scientific collecting permits and make sure they have enough people before they send the trucks from Frankfort. They are wanting to collect 9" white crappie. He will be sending me some info soon. Here is an example program at Weiss .Thanks!
RESTOCK WEISS
From Paul Rister,
For the crappie stocking project at Kentucky and Barkley lakes. The help we need right now is collecting brood stock. To do this, pending weather, we will be at Little River and Blood River on the 28th from 7 to 3 to collect live and good condition white crappie. We will have a hatchery truck to place the fish in.
We could be at the Little River State Park boat ramp and Wildcat Boat ramp on Blood River at 7 am. I would need each angler to sign in, and I would issue them a one day scientific collecting permit. This one day permit would allow them to keep 9 inch white crappie and take over their limit. We would only be interested in white crappie. We would prefer anglers bring us fish through out the day, rather than wait until the end of the day. The fish will be more stressed from riding around in a live well all day.
As we spoke at the meeting, these fish will be used as the brood stock to produce fingerings to stock back into the Little River and Blood River in early November.
The white crappie don’t have to come from Little River or Blood River, but need to come from KY or Barkley lakes. Anglers could fish other places, however there is the problem of getting us the fish.
The Twin Lakes Crappie Club, which is mostly Calloway and Marshall county anglers, are going to make a tournament out of the day on Blood River. They are going to charge $30. They will bring us their white crappie. We plan to record for them the number each angler brings in, and weigh the larger fish. At the end of the day, the angler with the most catch and biggest fish will split the pot of money.
