Hello everyone in crappie land. I had a question for evryone out there. My brother and I have fished from the bank at Rough all our lives and we finally boat a 16' alum boat to get out on. Just wondering what some good lakes within 2 hours of louisville are? They don't have to be huge just wanting to catch some nice crappie and blue gills.. Thanks in advance for any help..

I fish Nolin most of the time but primarily becouse we have a family lake house there. Similar in overall size to Rough and about the same drive depending on what part of Louisville you are coming from.

Beaver creek,Springfield reservoir,Cedar creek,Fagan branch,Green river.Brother you're within 2 hrs of alot of good fishin.

You're within 2hrs drive time of quite a lot of lakes.

Beaver Lake & Taylorsville Lake are pretty close ... Beaver is about 160 acres, and Taylorsville is about 3000 acres. Beaver has a 10hp motor size limit (you can have a bigger motor, you just can't run it ) There's no motor size limit on T-ville.
Cedar Creek Lake isn't much on Crappie of any size (they just removed the 9" size limit, this year, because they aren't growing) ... The Bluegill aren't doing all that well, either. Shellcrackers are doing OK. Best bet there, for fish of any size, is to fish for Channel Cats or Bass.
Green River Lake is 33,700+ acres ... but, is fairly cyclic in it's production of Crappie of size. It'll go for a year or two of small to decent sized fish, then along will come a year of Slabs, then it goes back to small fish.
Guist Creek is another lake within your reach ... but, I can't offer you any info about it, as I've never Crappie fished it.

Contact the KDFWR ... 800-858-1549 ... and have them send you the booklets/maps they have available, specifically the one that lists small lakes/access points. If they no longer print it, or they're out of them ... then you can check out this : http://fw.ky.gov/waterbody.aspx?lid=620&NavPath=C102 then just pick a lake, click on it, then click on "Maps" and the other links .. and it'll give you a decent overview of the lake/area.

Another item that you might consider getting, is the latest issue of the KY Atlas & Gazetteer. It's alot like having "Mapquest" in your vehicle, without having an internet connection :p (very handy when making trips to places you've never been to, before )
You can print out overview/outline maps, of the lakes you're interested in trying, right off the web ... then, if you want or need a topo of that lake, you can purchase one.

Thanks for all your input. What a great group of people we have on this site. This is a great resource for anyone trying to become a better fisherman. If anyone else has any opinions, keep them coming. It looks like i got alot of new waters to fish. thanks again
