Just got back from a trip to my Dad's place on Jonathon Creek yesterday. My stepson and I spent 10 days down there and I fished every day, rain or shine. (More rain than shine!)
We fished a very limited area around Pirate's Cove and Clear Creek. When we got there, the lake was way up and then started going down until the major storms came through and sent it up again. When we left it was still rising but I talked to Dad tonight and he said it was starting to recede slightly.
Anyway, the fishing was pretty tough given the conditions, but we did catch fish. The best day was last Monday, 3/31 we ended up with 28 that day and all were good sized. Most of them were caught on a solid body tube in red and chartreuse on a black 1/16 oz jig head, the rest on minnows. I had my best luck late in the day on the sunny days and caught fish in shallow water in the bushes in 2 to 4 feet of water.
Last Wednesday, my friend, Hoot, took me out in his boat and we hit a couple of spots and ended up with 5 fish in a couple of hours. I fished from the bank that night and caught 5 more, again in shallow water but this time with minnows.
After the storms, the water muddied up and the fishing was tougher but still caught a few in shallow water late afternoons.
Love the forum and look forward to learning more on here so I can catch more fish!
Congrats on the catch and the good trip!
Take your kids hunting and fishing, and you won't be hunting your kids
Thanks for the report, sounds like a pretty good week.
Take care,
Greenfish
Thanks for the report, glad you still got on some fish. I hope to get down there and try them sometime by the end of next week, unless Ma Nature is still angry with us.
Crappiecracker was there a big duck blind still holding tight at it's summer home on the bank in front of the cabin on Jonathan Creek with the red gravel drive and dock? This is right down from Pirates Cove back toward the 68 bridge on same side.
She got pulled home a few weeks back, but we haven't been around and with the high water all we can do is hope she doesn't go anywhere.
thanks!
Thanks everybody. Yes, I had a great time as always. itall, I only went down that way the one day when I went out on the lake with Hoot. Your talkin' about just down past the Christian Camp, right? I don't remember seeing the blind there but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. The only blind I saw is the one that is right out from Pirate's Cove in the middle of Jonathon Creek. It's always there!
CC, thanks for the reply. I figured it was worth trying, but yes it down from the Christian Camp back towards the 68 bridge on that same side. That one out in front of pirates cove is always there, but not ours.![]()
Itall, I think I saw your blind down about Lighthouse Landing headed north...:p
I wouldn't doubt it! We got lazy and didn't pull her when we should have, and then everytime we were able to the wind was 100 mph. Sooo as per usual she broke 2 spud poles, got one side ripped off, had a cable clamp break or get removed for us, and was found in the back of a cove near where we put it out. She is back home now, as of 2 weeks ago, but now there is a possibility of being beached badly if they run the water out too fast before next weekend.
EVERY YEAR it is something new with that blind.

We had a cable clamp break during duck season and found ours over 4 miles away in TN.
Luckilly, it came through unscathed.
