Nice! They don't eat shad, and even if they tried to they do not possess a true stomach to digest them. They swim with their mouths open sucking up anything in the water, run it over their gill rakers, and whatever isn't plankton gets expelled out. That's why it's not uncommon to hook one in the mouth, because the bait happened to get sucked in.
With no true stomach, that's why they feed continuously, on plankton.
