Thread: Did We Miss The Spawn On Kentucky Lake

We Are Heading Down The 14-20 Of April, Do You Think That We Will Catch The End Of Black And Right On For The Whites, Due To This Cold Front?

From what I am reading the whites should do it for the next week or so. The blacks are for the most part done.

still catchin blks and whts in deep water on north barkley. water temps have dropped to 49 - 51 degrees. lake(s) are still low too. you outta catch em good by then if the water level and temps come up.

Fished April 2-4. Water temp in Blood River was 70 !!! on April 2, dropped to 65 by April 4. I heard it hit 55 this past weekend. ALL the females we caught were re-absorbing their eggs. I DO know what that looks like. I think the water temp increased so fast the previous week the CRAPPIES missed the spawn, it wasn't US the fishermen who missed the spawn.

The males were still colored up good, but only one had a worn down tail. But we didn't catch a SINGLE ripe or spent female, black or white. Every female we cleaned did not spawn and could not have spawned this spring had she been released. Now that applies to the crappies WE caught and in the area WE fished.

I HOPE I'M WRONG! I'm not a pessimist by nature.

Fishing in Blood River...most of the blacks have spawned out, but most all of the white crappie we are catching are full of eggs and the eggs are still pretty firm and healthy looking. You should have several white crappie spawning when you come to the lake as the majority haven't done there thing yet due to the cold snap. As soon as the temps get right they will be there immediately though as they are staging on flats nearing spawning area right now....had 50 or so keepers today casting jigs. Good luck!

I agree with Casey. I have been finding the same conditions. I think this week or next will be prime for whites. The blacks I have been catching for the last week are spawned out however.

If it isn't too windy I suggest casting Charlie Brewer Slider jigs over brush and stakes. Texas rig the jig just like you were worm fishing and you can fish the cover pretty easily.

I also have been having luck with Roadrunners. White 1/16 ounce pro models with a 3 inch BPS triple ripple grub worked good this evening.

We'll be down for 2 days starting this Sunday. What affect do you think the rain/thunderstorms that are forcasted Thursday through Saturday will have on the crappie?
