Thread: Taylorsville update

Headed to Taylorsville today for the first time in two years. Had to battle the wind and worse, the wavesfrom all the boats but I still had a limit in two and a half hours. I didn't even head out until 1:00 this afternoon. At first I couldn't get a bite and all of a sudden I had my limit.

Now I am heading back out tomorrow morning once the storms pass. Not sure how good I will do after the storms go through. Hopefully there won't be any lightning or thunder. No matter what, it beats sitting at home. Did my hunnydue list tonight so the wife will love me again

Went again this morning and had my limit in an hour and a half. Also caught one that weighed in at 1 lb 13 oz. Thought I was hung until that snag started pulling back.

can you give any tips on techniques you were using? how deep were they holding and were you near the bank. I have been there once and only caught some dinks. Great job keep it up

I have no way to explain why, but all the fish I caught were holding in about 20 feet of water. I was long line trolling about 7 to 8 feet deep. I started out fishing very shallow and then moved out deep to get around a bunch of stickups. All of a sudden I caught about four fish. Obviously, I stayed out deep, trolling outside the visible standing timber. There was plenty of timber below me, and the stickups got a lot of my jigs, but thats where the fish are. I watched a guy cast a jig at one tree in the same depth I was fishing and he was letting it fall before winding it in. He caught a limit at that tree. Most of what I caught was about 10 inches but I did catch one that weighed in at a little less then two pounds. My biggest problem is that you can only keep 15 fish and I was done in no time. I will be back out tomorrow and I will update this post. I fished past the dam back up in the no wake area. Good luck.

Techniques that work on Taylorsville : all of them, with the exception of "dock shooting" (Settlers Trace Marina/boat slips are off limits to fishing)

I always concentrate on the following:

Banks - deeper/sloped banks

Cover - Blowdown trees, isolated standing trees, cedar trees close to shore, clumps or lines of hardwoods close to shore .... (in that order )

Seasonal Depth
- Spring: <10ft (on the "cover" mentioned)
- Summer: (sunrise til shade is off the bank I'm fishing) deep banks/water ... over blowdowns and around standing timber ... usually in 15-25ft of water, but fish suspend at the 6-12ft range

- Fall - 6-8ft deep in 15ft or deeper water, and right down in the branches of standing trees

Bait - minnows for >15ft ... weedless jigheads/tubes for most all depths ... 1/32 & 1/16oz Roadrunner marabou jigs for < 8ft of water depth.

I've caught them other ways, but these are my more successful methods. I am first and foremost a jig slinger, so bare that in mind, as it does influence the when/where/how/why of my T-ville fishing experience.

Best limit stringer I've ever taken from T-ville - 15 fish weighing a total of 10lbs (3/4lb average) ... caught on 1/16oz weedless jighead & tube, mid April, off one small root wad, in a small creek cove.

My hat's off to Jigboy ... for his catch, and his "Slab" !! It's oh so nice to know that there's some big 'ol gooduns still in there :D

Thanks for that input. I kind of lucked into them but I will tske luck anyday. Your knowledge of Taylorsville is appreciated. I want to take my son fishing for crappie at night hanging lanterns. Have you had any luck or have any suggestions.

on Taylorsville (or anywhere else, for that matter, in many a year).

Most of my night fishing on T-ville, has been for Bass ... and even that's been several years ago.
Most of my "post spawn into Summer" fishing trips to T-ville ... have been crack of daylight to midday timeframe trips. Then, I'm casting jigs to wood cover, on shady banks, until the shade disappears ... then casting to the "deeper" ends of blowdowns, until I stop getting hits. And, if I'm still in the mood for fishing ... I will usually do some trolling for Hybrids/White Bass. Mostly that's done with a Hot-n-tot trailing a small jig on a 18" leader. I do occasionally pick up a Crappie or two, doing that. Even get hold of some of those "cats", too :D (usually Channel Cats, though ... haven't hung into one of the "blues" yet).
If I was going to Crappie fish under lantern light ... I'd probably find a deep bank, with a good sized blowdown coming off the bank into deep water, and tie to a standing tree nearby ... drop some minnows down about 8-12ft ... and make the occasional jig cast overtop of the middle to deep end of the blowdown. Even a stand of cedar tree hulks, if they were in 15-25ft of water, might be a good alternative spot.

I wouldn't think it would be all that good, just yet. Water level came up 5ft over Summer Pool, after the rains. And, with this cold weather, it probably won't be warmed up enough, either.
I've always got into the spawning fish at T-ville, during the first two weeks of May ... normally. And that's when the lake isn't flooded/flooding from recent rains.

But, if you do go ..... please post a report !!!

Hello CP,

It cant be any worse that my trip to Reelfoot a week ago. Or maybe it can.
It is not my first choice, but dying to get on that lake. Thought maybe it may warm a little on thursday and friday, with temps in the 70's on saturday. MIght be a good weekend to stay on the home lakes. Heck, i'll post whichever lake i end up at!
