Thread: Winds from the East, Fish bite the least

Well, I used to believe this saying but today proved that as BS. We had a 5-10 mph ENE wind, cloudy skies, clear water at 60 degrees and killed the crappie. Caught approx 70 with 46 keepers after culling 10 inch fish; thought we had more then we had. Largest two fish 14 inches, several 13's & 12's rest 10's & 11's. Caught all fish around cover, laydowns, and logs on jigs. Fish were caught 5-7 ft deep over 10-16 ft water. Bubblegum/char and john deere green curly tails on TeeZur 3/32 oz hotheads. Just goes to show, you can't catch them unless you are. on the water.

The only thing I consider in regards to the wind is how hard is it suppose to blow and from what direction. If I waited on the wind to get right on the days I can fish my boat tires would rot.

The cloudy skies and 60 degree water temps. were what hooked you up in my opinon. DTG is right the ahve to eat and sounds like they were doing a good job of it.

The wind is suppose to blow anywhere from 20-30mph tomorrow. Let er' blow! Sends a lot of folks to the house.

Still had 5 mph East wind, but clear skies today. Limited out with 60 keepers (2 people) out of close to 100 crappie. Depth had changed to 3-5 ft deep, but still casting jigs over cover like yesterday. Color didn't really seem to make a difference today. Buddy was using bubblegum/char and I was using lemon maringe/char curly tails. If you haven't tried the Hot Grubs by Southern Pro, check them out. Fish were full of minnows and eggs so looks as if the spawn will be early here this year.

Have you tried Southern Pro's Hot Grubs? Man these things have the action as well as color schemes. Great on TeeZur's hot heads and on ultra lite rigs. We've caught 128 10-14 inch keeper crappie in three days this week.

You catching anything on T-ville? We're heading to Reelfoot in two weeks and they're tearing them up down there now.

Don't know what this cold front is going to do to the crappie. Highs only in the 40's and 20's for lows. Will probably run them out of the tree tops and slow things down for a few days.

I think I remember you telling me, once before, that you fish Doe Valley.
I do have Southern Pro tubes, and an assortment of Teezur jigheads ... just haven't had much opportunity to put them to use.
Haven't been to T-ville, but have heard that they're starting to catch some, there. If the rains don't flood it, and the cold snap doesn't last more than a few days, it should be on fire in a couple of weeks.
Haven't seen the weather forecast mention anything about 40's/20's .... just low to high 50's (day) and 30's (night) for next week. That will definitely pull them off the shallows, and delay them for awhile. But, it's still a bit early for them to be on the beds, at least around here. This quick warmup just jumpstarted them into the prespawn feeding ... I doubt it's been long enough for the eggs to mature enough to drop. If the weather gets back to "normal", by mid April, it would put the spawn almost back to normal ... late April into early May.
I'll be heading to Watts Bar in mid April .... "meanwhile, back at the ranch", I'll be trying to get my younger brother's boat ready to use, getting all my gear ready for the season, & finishing up all the home "projects" (for myself and my Mom). That should take me thru this upcoming week of cold weather, and I will hopefully be free and clear to start my fishing adventures ... just about the time the fishing should be starting to rebound back to some more normal terms :D -- that's my "plan", anyway :p
