More or less, yeah ... it's a reaction bite. Plus (IMHO) a jig doesn't transmit vibrations thru the water as much as a crank does, so there is the possibility of the jig bypassing the fish before they know it's coming. The larger profile also helps the fish to home in on the crank. Crappie are not slash/dash feeders, or long distance chasers, so they sense the incoming crank & set themselves in a position to intercept it or else take a swipe at it as it passes. (just my humbleopinion)
