Humbled Again!!
4 hrs with a 2 minnow bottom rig and 1 Crappie!!!
lm bass, stripers, yellow bass, bluegill, yellow perch....but only 1 crappie!
Back at the ramp, and in comes a local guide with a cooler FULL of nice crappie!
I still got a lot to learn about KY lake!

I've always thought that whoever coined the phrase, "90% of the crappie are in 10% of the water," Must have been talking about KY lake when he said it. What he left out was that 10% is constantly moving. Lol

Callen, I also agree with the phrase, 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the fisherman. The serious guys/gals don't mess around and usually do most of the catching. Don't think this is lake specific, but just that with all the high$ electronics, special high$ setup equipment, the serious fisherman will catch a pile more fish than someone out fishing without all the equipment and doesn't have the money, just fishing with a boat and some minnows for Crappie or something. Fishing is almost getting too costly unless you are a pro/guide and can afford all the equipment to compete with all the people who have the equipment. If you don't care of the cost/fish, then it doesn't matter. Hire a guide @$300, hopefully catch your limit and enjoy a trouble free day of fishing.

$300 would get you plenty of electronics to catch crappie on about any lake in the country. Sure you can spend a ton of money if you want but not everyone catching alot of fish is spending a ton of money on gear doing it. It stands to reason serious fisherman are going to catch more fish most of the time but it isn't a money thing.

It's just like any other sport, hobby, or interest, it pays to play. You don't have to have the best to be the best, but having quality equipment does help. The desire to learn, becoming a student will make you better over time. Some of us have been crappie fishing for most of our lives, my experience being in the 35 plus years, and I still learn something every trip on the water.
Not only are the fish changing, but our environment is changing as well. My best tool in my bag of tricks is not my electronics, but my years of fishing logs. I use these more often than what you might think.
Regardless, as me and some others have discussed this week, don't let anything take the fun out of fishing!

90/10 sounds about right, but I see the reasons a little different. My dad caught a load of fish back in the day with a super sixty flasher. I do agree electronics help(I can't imagine the fish my dad and his friends could have caught with a modern DF) but there are other factors too. I still know some crappie fisherman who don't have modern electronics and catch a lot of fish. My honest opinion is that the biggest factor is having someone teach you about Crappie fishing and shorten the learning curve by years. Especially when they give you some of their spots. Time in the seat is a big factor too. I spend a lot of days, when I am by myself on the water, fishing new to me water. Most of these days are unproductive, but I see it as a necessity and an investment in the future. A network of friends that share fish information is also a huge boost. The fish are biting somewhere, but you can't be everywhere. Putting out attractants is another factor. 8t may take years for a pile to be discovered by another fisherman, if put in the right place. Any way I guess that my point was that there are many factors and paths that add up to success on the water. Just my two cents. Lol
