ok so i got a little bit of a late start to taylorsville could not leave the house till 7am, then got all the way to elk creek and realized i did not bring the rod holders. drove back to j-town got rod holers and then to taylorsville finally on the water 9am. i just aquired 8 southern crappie 16 ft poles from a member on here so i wanted to troll around with them a bit and try to get used them. i have never spider rigged before so i only took 4 of them. i did not catch anything but i did get out there it is going to take a few times for me to get used to it. water was 56 degrees and choppy, very windy early got blown into the bank all 4 rods hung up lol but only lost 1 road runner. have not caught the first fish yet but can already tell i am going to love it.thanks to all of you who have answered my many questions on this and thanks uleryboy for the rods.

Keep fishing and it will all fall in place.
Hang in there I use to be a die hard tube jig man now it's eight poles out the front. Never know what your going to hang into. My last trip to linville gave me a good 45 minute fight with a huge spoon bill . It's a blast on 14' crappie rod. But as always the big one got away.
You didnt mention how you were riggin with respect to the wind ...
Spider riggin drifting with the wind is a common technique for open water riggin ...
I find that spider riggin into the wind gives me much better boat control ... especially if following Contour lines close to the bank ...

i was fishing into the wind i was told a specific spot to try and a specific way to fish it because it would be a good spot to learn, i don't feel comfortable giving up this persons spot, and i know thats not what your asking. i am just trying to explain what i did was not because i was trying to be in the wind i was just fishing as i was told. tried to stay on the drop off which this spot had a good line and easy to follow. i obviously getting bites because minnows where being taken but i guess i was just to busy to catch the nibbles so i suppose i was just feeding them.
so are you saying going into the wind is better than drifting with the wind ? i am new to this and was actually considering outboarding up and coming back with the wind at one point yesterday but i decided to stick with what i was doing for the experience it was not easy at first but i stuck it out and once the wind died down it was a nice slow ride
any advice is appreciated
Spider riggin into the wind allows better boat control ...which is beneficial for staying on a specific Contour line or a certain distance from the bank ... and for when crappie are expected to be oriented to a certain depth pattern at a given time ...
Spider riggin with the wind is a good tactic for open water ...where occasional adjustments of boat are plenty for staying on a drift path ...and for when crappie are expected to be scattered and roaming open water ...
Use both methods ...
*Into the wind for more boat control and crappie on depth contours ...
*With the wind for less needed boat control and crappie being scattered ...

I predominately spider rig into the wind for boat and speed control. If the wind is so bad I can't go into it then I am usually bummed about the wave action making my rigs bounce so I'll move. It may just be my lack of confidence but I believe I rarely catch anything with my rigs bouncing, from chop or wakes. I usually head to a creek arm or upstream to where I can find calmer water. I seem to remember reading in my Capps and Coleman book where they added water and weight to the front of their boat to dampen the bounce in a tournament. I just move as I don't fish them, and am just fun or freezer fishing.
dannyr3_8 thanked you for this post
I almost always go with the wind. Drift paddles are great for that!!
