Case in point : I had 3 Crappie in my aquarium, and occasionally they'd get territorial ... their favorite way of getting either of the other two fish to give them some space was to nip their tail.

Also look at the fish in Kycreek's thread "Ohio River Tribs 10/27" .... you'll notice the one fish yet to be cleaned has the bottom half of its tail missing, but when you look at the egg sacs of the cleaned fish, they're just not ready to be laid anytime soon.
And it's usually only the male that gets a worn down, bloody tail from fanning out the nest ... as the females don't involve themselves in nest preparation, they just make the rounds and drop a portion of their eggs in a nest & then move back out to their staging area. Dropping eggs in several to many different nests is the female's only job during the spawn.

First real post here so pardon me if I'm speaking out of turn. I was kinda wondering about something similar to this myself. I enjoyed a nice day on Cumberland back on the 13th. Not great success but did end up with 4 keepers. 3 of the 4 were full of eggs. The egg sacks/eggs were the size and texture of what I'm used to being within a few weeks of spawning. I've read theories about 2 spawns per year, not spawning if conditions aren't right, and starting growth of the egg sack for the upcoming spring spawn. Not sure what's correct but I did find it interesting.
