This is for any lake or stream in KY that isn't part of the Tennessee, Cumberland, Ohio, or Mississippi River systems. Those require a Coast Guard "Six Pack" license also.

Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Commercial Guide License Requirements

This is what is required to be qualified to take the test to try to get a "Six Pack" license.
OUPV/Six-pack License Requirements - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum

A training course is not required but may be the way to go. The application process is enough to deter most folks. Truth be known, 99% of what is required is just a money grab. They will $100 bill you to death.

Play their game, play by their rules. Guess one doesn't have to like it, just do it.

Your USCG lic. is good for 5 years. You will have to renew at that time. I'm not sure if the OUPV requires a radar endorsement. My Lic. does, but I'm a licences Master of towing vessels. The radar endorsement has to be renewed every 5 yrs also. You may also have to have a Radio Operator's Lic. I do. You may also be required to hold a TWIC (Transportation Worker's Identification Card). You can get them that are good for 2 yrs or 5 yrs.

If I understand the USCG's position on this correctly, you will HAVE to have a USCG Lic. if you operate on ANY waterway where commercial traffic may transit.

NOTE!!! If you have ANY health issues (heart problems, sleep disorders, diabetes, epilepsy...) you'll run into problems. If you have EVER been convicted of a felony or had recent DUI's, you're gonna run into problems. Your Dr. will have to fill out the specific USCG physical examination form and if every "T" is not crossed and every "i" is not dotted you'll run into problems!

After your first issue you don't have to provide a CPR cert. for the renewal.

If you hold a USCG lic. you won't have to take a boating safety course or provide a CPR and first aid certificate for your Guide Lic.

After you've held a Guide Lic. for 3 consecutive yrs. you don't have to provide the 2 character ref. letters anymore.
