I think probably some ARE "hopeful" of a better grade of fish, but I've seen them catch dinks even when using a 2.25" Lake Fork Baby Shad plastic body & a large minnow tipped on the hook. That would make the jig/plastics/minnow offering close to 4" in length .... and I've seen Crappie caught on that rig, that weren't more than an inch or two longer than the bait
Crappie are opportunistic feeders, so even if they see a larger than normal offering come swimming slowly by, they may consider it too easy a meal to pass up ... regardless of their own size. They don't like to "chase" a bait, but they will "follow" one for a distance ... then make up their mind to grab it before it gets away, or ignore it and turn back to where they came from.
