    Default What triggers the fish?

Wasn't intending to fish yesterday but when my wife says "its nice out, aren't you going fishing?" Been married to that woman for fourty years now. Now that's love. It was 10:30 and I was baiting up and adjusting depths. Wind out of the south and the channel runs north and south, water color perfect, temp was 43. I peaked at my Huminbird while readying and saw the fish just off the break and enough of them to get me excited. The spots on the bank that mark those areas that produce, I tend to let the wind ease me back then zig zag with my trolling motor up an over the breaks where they tend to gather. All I could muster were a few shorts and several barely legals I'd kept. Subconsciously I hear a motor getting close......." Are ya getting them Russ?" It was Brad and he'd brought his nephew would never been spider rigging before. Isn't that just Brad? 2 days before Christmas and this boys got a smile that's big enough to sink the boat. I told them I had several between 6 1/2 and 7", they laughed and motored about 300 yards down and it looked like they were doing about the same. Then the wind dies off and the rods start ta twitch. I see Brad standing and netting several fish for his nephew. Should we try and second guess or just be happy that it happens and keeps drawing us back? I'm no weatherman nor a fortune teller but some days it seems a switch gets thrown and BAM. Well the wind picks up along with the rain and looking south I could see it moving in so both boats head for the ramp. Brad pulls along side and says "hand me your keys and I'll get your truck." My ole legs had already gotten the keys out of my pocket. For those unfamiliar, Barren summer pool level is 552 and winter draw down is 525 and the Corp says it is at 528 now. Given the incline of the ramp, distance to the parking lot, it was raining and windy, an I ain't gettin no younger! It to took me a mili-second to say yes. Thanks to my wife for putting up with me, and for a good friends Like Brad! Proud to call ya my friend. I had another early Christmas present. Merry Christmas Yall!

Russ, always good to see you on the water and pretty neat we had it to ourselves for a while and was catching them to boot. Bryson had a good time and I think he'll be more than eager to jump in the boat with me again the next time I call. Your more than welcome on helping you get loaded. Just what good friends do for each other. Merry Christmas friend. Here's some pic's of my nephew. Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1419358570.183416.jpg

What triggers fish to bite? I don't know, but if I ever find out I'll make a bunch of money with it .

I def wish I knew the answer to this but what I will say is when the barometer is dropping or low, I catch fish. When high pressure is in affect for 3 days in a row I catch from that point forward on that 3rd day. Seems like if I have two low pressure days (rainy, gloomy) I catch the fire out of fish but boy you try on that day when the sun moves back in and I struggle. On the same hand I can say that this past spring we had two days of rain which turned our lakes to a muddy mess. I against my own judgment decided to go fishing in the sunny blue bird skies. That sun had warmed the muddy water in shallows and holly moly!!!! That was crazy is all I can say. I seem to like the sun in the spring in dirty water now.

    Good post by the way!!

What triggers fish (to bite) ?? IMHO .... hunger, greed, competition to survive, anger, & territorial protection are a few things that come to mind. Curiosity might also play a role.

Not all "bites" from a fish are due to the fish wanting to eat what's in front of them. Sometimes they simply want to kill or drive off the offending presence.

What makes them go from finicky to ravenous, or vice versa ... any/all of the above + the prevailing conditions of the water & weather would be my best guess.

I sure do enjoy it when it does happen, an till we figure it out we'll just have to fish as often as we can to be there on the lake when it does. All I know is when the magic hits an I'm on the lake it makes me happier than........Well it just makes me happy. I'll try an tone it down this year Pappy I promise.
