Most "good" lakes are South of Lexington ... about 1-2hrs drive South, actually. Not really any sizable lakes North of Lexington, either.
I live on the East end of Lexington, and it takes me approximately :
2hrs to Green
1.5 - 2hrs to Cumberland (depending on which part of the lake)
1.5hrs to Taylorsville
1.5hrs to Cave Run
1hr to Herrington
1hr to Cedar Creek

between green river and cumberland which would be better, have fished green river before and did not do well at all

Definitely Green River right now Cumberland is very tough due to them bringing the water back up.

Check the posts on Cave Run lake for crappie, this week. East of Lexington, but not south of.

If you can wait until after next weekend, you'll see what happened at the Cumberland Fruit Jar Tourney.
There are conflicting reports about whether or not Cumberland is going to be allowed to fill back to the original Summer Pool level of 723' this year, or not. It's currently at 706' and some reports have that level being the highest it will be held at this year.
Green is supposed to be brought up from Winter Pool of 668' .... to the 673' level ... by mid April. Then by mid May .. brought up to the 675' Summer Pool level.
All of these levels are dependent upon how much rain falls and when, of course.
If you're planning a Spring trip ... consider attending the Spring Fling @ Green on April 12th, held at Holmes Bend Marina/Resort. Even if you don't catch any fish, you still get a great meal at the fish fry, and you could even end up winning some prizes in our door prize draw. There's no cost to attend, and you are not obligated to volunteer to bring anything for the fish fry unless you just want to do so.

i was looking at possibly may 2nd, and hoping it is not too late for crappie

Kissfan4 I dont think that will be too late to fish Green River Lake. I normally have good luck fishing there that time of year. Should still be a good time to be there; cant say for Cumberland as I dont make over there very often.

my thinking was that since this cold weather is still hanging around, at least here in northern ky, the spawn is going to be late this year.
