Thread: Cold winter effect on spring fishing

Hey guys!

Well I am terrible about posting throughout the year (even though I do fish a little bit year round) but spring is right around the corner and I go a lot and like to come here to share info and see how everyone else is doing. It is a great site. Anyways how do you all think the really cold winter will effect spring fishing? if any?

Ive heard of a couple of shad kills. That will have an effect on fishing and usually helps it somewhat. The cold weather has also locked up most of the ramps so there has probably been very little fishing pressure the last couple of months.

Timing might be off but fishing should be better.

It is my belief that the shad kills we have had will (like dux said) make the fish'n better. I know we've had at least 4 good kills on the North end. Less baitfish more competition for food. Should make them more aggressive.

It's kind of a double edged sword though. More competition for food would also possibly translate into lower weights and growth due to the fish having to expend more energy in order to get the calories. That may in turn translate into a reduced spawn. Just a theory of mine. No data to back it up.

Hopefully they'll start fire'n up on those Asian Carp fry.

I would guess pretty fast. Seems like they go from not being there in a waterbody to two foot long. I always forget about them when I make my way onto a lake or river that has them as I typically fish on water that they haven't messed up (yet ) then they go to jumping dang near in the boat scring the beejeezus out of you.
