The water temps are a little ahead of schedule. Usually Vertical jig'n & spider rig'n work good in mid March. With the temps continuing to move upward Long Line'n & casting shallow cover may work well too.

Planning on a fishing trip to Neely Henry or Kentucky Lake in the middle of March. Both lakes are great but I have to pick one. Kentucky lake is 100 miles closer and I can stay on the water. What's the best technique for this time of year. Longlining?

I remember one day last year I went and it was before March 15th. Swamp Creek opens around March 15th and it wasn't open yet so we fished the mouth of big Sandy and done very well longlining. A friend has already been doing well longlining but several short fish.

I know the temps are a little ahead of the last few years but I'm just hoping the water levels stay fairly stable this year. I'm usually down there the 2nd week in April and the last few years it has been crazy.
I'd have to pick Kentucky Lake if it was me. It's my favorite place to fish.
There are a lot of people down here on KY lake fishing right now.
I think most of them are throwing the Umbrella Rig for Bass Fishing, LOL I fished last week, and it seems like every boat I saw, had a fisherman throwing an Umbrella Rig.
The weather is very warm.
The Bass fishing has been fairly good during the past 2 weeks. So has the Crappie Fishing in certain areas of the Lake.

I live 10 miles from the 160,000 acre Kentucky Lake, and the 57,000 acre Barkley Lake is within 25 miles of my house. I live 10 miles from 220,000 acres of Water.
I live in an Outdoor Paradise
I wish I could come down there now and stay until....forever!
I hope the weather and water levels hold for ya. Man, I'd like to get down there 3 or 4 times a year but it's just not in the cards right now. One year, I want to get down there for the red ear and gills. I guess thats early may. Once I retire, I'd like to add a fall trip down there too. I already have my resevations for Hillman Ferry in April. I'm just counting the days.
Got to say, I just don't get all the hipe over the umbrella rigs.....just not for me either.
Good luck on your trips and keep in touch.

That settles it I'm heading to Kentucky lake. I'll choose when based on conditions and weather. Everything is ready to go just waiting on the right time.
