    Default Kentucky Lake crappie

Fished the north end of KY Lake around the Eggner Ferry bridge Friday. Got a late start, 10:00am and fished till about 4:00pm. Caught 42 crappie, but many were under 10 inches. But did manage 16 really nice ones. All black but one. Tightlining minnows 16-22 ft deep in 17 to 25 FOW. Also caught several white bass, 6 largemouth bass from 2 to 4 lbs, and a number of frisky yellow bass, and two drum which kept the action pretty steady. Fish of all descriptions are really biting right now on Ky Lake,....including the crappie.

Thanks for the report, hope to get out there as soon as all this boat traffic dies down.

Were you out today? I was trolling Bandits near a guy who was dunking minnows this AM north of the bridge. I caught one crappie about 1 1/2 pounds within 40 yards of him then one bigger a hundred or so yards farther down the drop. He was working the inside of a point on the secondary channel and I was running the main drop. He asked me if I was using cranks while we were still within talking distance. He said he just had a couple of dinks then left after I got farther away.

I ended up with 7 nice keepers, 2 2-3 pound bass, a 3 pound white cat, a ton of yellows, and an 8 or so pound drum. Try that on a 16 foot Capps and Coleman with 100 feet of line out!

I left after a couple of hours and about 1000 boats going by. I had to remind myself why I hate the lake on weekends---- holidays are even worse.

No that was not me, mrdux. I caught my crappie on Friday and there was not a lot of boat traffic. But....I went back about 4:00pm yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, just to kill some time, enjoy the lake and watch the KenLake fireworks. I ended up using a jigging spoon in the mouths of some of the small bays and caught the heck out of largemouth bass. Not monsters, but from 2 to 4 lbs. I had a blast. This time of year, a jigging spoon is one of the best ( and most overlooked) ways to catch all kinds of fish, from crappie to catfish and everything in between. I found the bass in 16 to 18 ft of water chasing large schools of minnows and really hammered them. Several times, as I was reeling one in, I'd see two or three other fish following it. By the way, I was surprised by what I thought was light boat traffic yesterday afternoon. If you want to see boat traffic, get over on Barkley down around the Kuttawa/Buzzard Rock area. I was there last Saturday and had to quit fishing because of all the boats. I can only imagine what it was like there yesterday.

yes boat traffic, I guess the only thing good about this shift work is fishing during the week, early, before the sun and the traffic gets started
