    Default Lake Carnico 3/20/11

Made a trip to Carnico today. I realized it should be named "Garnico.". If this was the only place I had to fish I would quit. We fished for almost 5 hours got 7 bites, caught 5 crappie and one bass. Water temp 47-50 degrees.

I went up Friday, & managed to pull out 4 dinks. Crappie were out in deep water in big schools. I was spiderrigging for the 1st time ever with 4 - 14ft. trolling rods that I just bought off this site last week. Roadrunners on the bottom with a jig about 2ft. up. All the fish were caught on the roadrunners. My main motor wouldn't start & that had me preoccupied while I was there. (Turned out the fuel line quick disconnect plunger somehow got stuck) As soon as I got home and messed with it the motor started instantly. Felt like a dumb***. Everytime I would go thru those schools of fish I'd have rods twitching. For the 1st time ever spiderigging and with the boat trouble I felt OK about it.

There were several boats out and I don't know that anyone was catching anything. If there was ever a place that didn't suit my eye it would have to be there. The crappie we caught were munchkins!!!

They're "munchkins" because hardly anyone fished for them, and they've overpopulated & stunted. I believe they're White Crappie, also ... which only makes the situation worse. Same deal on Cedar Creek Lake, except there's only Black Crappie in it ... but, they took the size limit (9") off & raised the creel from 15 to 30, and that has seemed to help some.

I've fished it "once" ....over 30yrs ago .... and all I remember catching is 3-4" Bluegill (fishing from the little "dock") ... LOL !!

theyre both species in there and i usually catch black and whites 50/50, ye they are munchkins but you can get a fillet(one bites worth per fillet) off one and they are great eating, but it takes 40 fish to fill a ziplock. Also I will fill livewell full of black crappie from there throw em in farm pond and have some good fish in 2 yrs to catch and eat. Folks need to fry these little ones whole to get every bit o meat of the little guys. Lake needs them taken out by the thousand, not very fertile water paired with limited food/tons competition.
