They are just simply a Black Crappie ... no more, no less. They just have a marker gene that creates the black pigmentation stripe. They're all over the Southeast ... either from stocking or by accidental transport (floods, washing thru dam turbines & locks, etc).
I've even caught them in Cedar Creek Lake ... and the Crappie in there were taken from hatchery stock & possibly from some of the local lakes.
In defense of the creel clerk ... he may have meant that it was a "freak" accident that this fish was in Nolin. :p ... or that it's a "freak" of Nature. But, chances are ... he just didn't know
